WHAT IS BLOOD STEM CELL?
Blood is made up of various different kinds of cells: red blood cells, white blood cells and platelets. All the different kinds of blood cell start out as a cell called a 'stem cell'. Blood stem cells are formed in the bone marrow and then receive chemical signals that tell them which kind of blood cell to become before entering the blood stream. Blood stem cells can be obtained from peripheral blood, bone marrow and cord blood.
Blood Stem Cell
An immature cell that can develop into all types of blood cells
Red Blood Cell
Carry oxygen through all part of body
Platelet
Blood clotting agent
WHY BLOOD STEM CELLS NEEDED?
Donated blood stem cells are needed for the treatment of life-threatening diseases, such as leukemia, lymphoma, thalassemia and severe aplastic anemia.
White Blood Cell
Fight infection
HOW WILL I BE SELECTED AS A DONOR?
You will be selected as suitable donor by undergoing a special laboratory test which requires a sample of blood to be taken. When testing, they are not looking at the blood group as this does not have to match. They are looking for proteins on the surface of white blood cells called Human Leucocyte Antigens (HLA). You will be selected as a donor when your blood HLA matched or similar with HLA patient.
